    • Here is a very nice obit written by one of Eric's friends for our World Bank Retirees Bulletin:
      In Memoriam: Eric N. McMillan
      Feb. 21, 1938 Nov 22, 2003
Eric Norman McMillan died suddenly of a heart attack in Washington, D.C. on Nov.22, aged 65. He will be sorely missed by his family, by the Washington translation community, and in many other circles.
Eric was born at Drogheda in Ireland in 1938 and educated in Belfast and at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, where he received a B.A. and M.A. in Modern and Mediaeval languages. Soon after graduation he joined Shell Oil at The Hague as a translator. Among his colleagues there were at least two with whom he was to be reunited in the Language ServicesDivision of the World Bank, which Eric joined in 1973. Here he soon became a key member of a highly skilled unit, regularly working from at least five languages.
Eric's abilities in translation administration led to his appointment as English Translation Section manager in 1990, the position he heldon retirement in 1993. Both the World Bank and the ATA were well servedby Eric's experience in and attachment to his profession; he was an ATA Board member for seven years.
Outside the office Eric was for many years a keen hiker but loved above all to travel, often with the Smithsonian Institution, for which he led a number of tours. He was an enthusiastic philatelist, which led to his becoming a docent at the National Postal Museum, and a philosophical gardener on his city plot.
Eric was married twice, first to Anneke Pleijsier and subsequentlyto Christine Windheuser, both of whom survive him. He was the loving father of two children,Bryan McMillan and Vanessa Carns, and grandfather of six.
Teksten bij het bijzetten van de urn":
      Dear all:
Our thoughts will be with you on this day (Thursday), when we say a final goodbye to Eric.
Now that the initial grieving is past, the good memories of Eric and hislife are his real epitaph.
Perhaps a quote based on John Donne may suit:

      "Death, you are nothing!
Some may call you mighty, but you are not!
Because those who die, stay forever alive
      In our hearts."
Love to you all, Ron and Jan
I have been giving a lot of thought to what might be added on my behalf during Eric's interment.
Firstly, if no one else has suggested it, could the traditional Irish Blessing be read?
"May the road rise to meet you
May the wind be always at your back
May the sun shine warm upon your face
May the rains fall softly on your fields
      And until we meet again
May Gold hold you in the palm of his hand."
Secondly, just a few of the words I wrote to Vanessa about Eric, which sum up how I feel: I remember clearly our parents' pride in their "first born" as he started INST, then Cambridge, then began working for Shell inThe Hague, then gave them the gift of two lovely grandchildren. What more could any parents have wanted in a son?
Now I think often of a brother who was also a wonderful friend, offeringsupport generously when needed, sharing family news and developing a lasting bond of love and respect over the years. All who met him remarkedon his humour, his charm and his intellect. What more could any little sister have wanted in a big brother? I truly do miss him daily.
      Lovingly yours, Linda
